What I love about yoga

One of the things I love about yoga is that it can never be taken away from me.  I’ve learned the fundamentals, the principles, the philosophies, and so they remain forever mine.  I can take them with me everywhere I go.  They will always be there for me, unless I choose to let them go.

In life, so many things come and go that we have no control over. Sometimes we are left feeling powerless, abandoned and afraid to give our hearts again.  But after many years of practice, I have learned that yoga is not one of those things.  I’ve learned that it’s safe to approach it with complete and open heart, because it’s teaching me to access my deepest, truest self.  And that’s something that can never be taken away.

The way I practice has changed over the years, and I am sure it will continue to evolve as life continues to ruffle and enlighten me.  What began as a physical challenge steadily evolved and spilled over into my spiritual quest for self knowledge and acceptance.  I to feel it brewing into something bigger and bigger all the time.

I find myself practising with a deep sense of reverence and respect not only for my body but for the magic that flows through it.  The magic of the universe, that, if I allow it, will help me discover magic and strength within me. Magic that allows my body to become strong, powerful and flexible, and does the same for my heart, my mind and my soul. Magic that, if I allow it, can work through me toward the highest good of all people, the planet and even the universe.

Now – more than ever – I believe in magic!

The physical practice of Yoga, and the beautiful communities that form around it, have been instrumental in helping me solidify my belief.  I am less afraid of being alone, because I feel part of something indestructible.  My senses are wildly alive and feeling the universal energy that surrounds me.  The same energy that created all the beauty and wonder we know on this earth …and beyond!   All I need to do is close my eyes and feel the breath of life flowing in and out of my body, and there it is.

When I approach my mat now, I do so with a sense of desire for that freedom that lies within.  When I approach people, I do so with an understanding that they desire that same sense of freedom.  When I approach life, I do so with a sense of abandon to a magic that I enjoy, but may never fully understand.  I have faith in all that we sense in life, yet can’t quite explain.

And that is my Yoga!  That is a yoga that can never be bound by time and space.  I take it with me everywhere I go.  It’s untouchable.  It’s a love that will never die- and it feels good!
